Session Details

This session will explore mindset and its powerful influence on how students learn, process and retain information. Drawing on a background as an EA Level 2 Specialist Dressage Coach, FEI competitor and Clinical Nurse Educator, Amber examines the science of skill acquisition in a way that is interesting, engaging, evidence-based and practical for the arena.

The presentation helps coaches recognise when a rider has shifted into a mindset state where they can no longer hear, absorb or integrate instruction. It then provides practical ways to guide them back to a state where learning can occur. The session explores how memory works and why forgetting is a normal and necessary part of the learning process. It highlights the difference between recognition and recall, and explains how spaced repetition, interleaving and effortful learning create stronger, more lasting learning connections.

The session also examines how coaching language and feedback can shape a rider’s relationship with effort, error and productive struggle. Coaches will leave with clear, science-informed strategies to support riders not only emotionally, but cognitively, building deeper understanding, stronger retention and long-term resilience in training.
